Hundertwasser and Vali [Sep. 7th, 2006|06:46 pm]
Vali Myers Appreciation and Information

I have been teaching my students about Hundertwasser and so I brought few books about him. While looking through one I was surprised to see a photograph of him with Vali... but I can't find more information about when and where they met (mind you I haven't had time to read all the books I have on Hundertwasser yet). Anyone here know more information?

This morning I finally received a book (from eBay) that I've been after for some years now : The Photojournalist , a collection of photographs by Annie Leibovitz and Mary Ellen Mark, printed in 1974. My mother used to own this book in her teens and she tore out the Vali Myers picture (shown above) and put it on her wall and kept it with her wherever she went for several years. Eventually the picture was lost as well as the rest of the book, but now we have it again and I thought I'd share it with you.

There's a narrative to the picture by Mary Ellen Mark, if you care to read it, click here : Collapse )

Desireable out of print book on eBay.. *sigh* [Sep. 4th, 2006|03:51 pm]

Go check it out : Vali Myers : drawings 1949-1979
There's 12 preview pictures, all in good sizes and colors.
Wish I could afford it... maybe one day they'll make a more affordable reprint.
I think Tascen should make a book about Vali's works, they've covered other interesting artists like Hundertwasser too.

Oh, and by the way ; I e-mailed Ruth Cullen about her Vali Myers documentaries, and she sent me a kind reply in which she told me that both films are available on dvd, for 50 euro each. So if anyone's interestd, contact her.

end of summer, Vali news [Aug. 30th, 2006|11:05 pm]

Hello, it's been a while since I last updated, I hope everyone's doing ok.
I found a new web page with a piece on Vali during her time in Positano,
and the article has four nice quality photographs too... the only set back ?
The page is in Italian, (understandably) and unfortunately
it's not a language that I master..
but would any of you others, by any chance know how to transate it,
or at least parts of it ?

*glances around hopefully at the 20 other members of this community*

Thanks for setting up this info on Vali [Aug. 18th, 2005|02:33 pm]
Vali Myers Appreciation and Information
Grateful to have found this site after scouring the Net for info on the fabulous Vali.

First saw her book over as an impressionable teen a decade ago in the bookshop I worked at...stunned by the artwork and the photos...the wild woman atop a donkey in the fog, drawing by candlelight in a gilded cage surrounded by jewel-teared Madonnas. Years later, the name came to my mind "Vali Myers." I found Sheldon Rochlin's "Witch of Positano" VHS on the Internet and later, the book again on some dusty shelves. Two slices of Vali-life but not enough.

Hope one day to visit the museum in Australia. If anyone's been, can you post a description here?

Best and thanks...

There was a good article in a local paper here in Melbourne, about the volunteers who are keeping Vali's studio going and how they're asking people who have memories of Vali to come in and contribute to a record of such stories.

They're hoping to have it available on cd at an exhibition of her work that's coming up; I'm looking forward to that. I've got a copy of the article & the photo they ran with it, but no access to a scanner at the moment, alas. I'll see what I can do bout posting it here sometime though..

The article made me wish I'd gone to the studio more while Vali was still there, but I was shy, and it never occurred to me she wouldn't always be there when I got over my tongue-twistedness in her presence! Still, it's nice to know her friends are keeping the studio open & it's still serving the purpose Vali intended it to.

I was wandering through the halls after class and there was this stack of books outside one door. they were piled there for people to read or take, whatever. there was an old issue of the paris review and it had an interview/article about Vali along with some samples of her work. I was instantly enamored and have been ever since. finding info on her is rare it seems so I was surprised to find a community here.

I would like to see the Tightrope Dancer film. has anyone found it and, if so, where?
